HERITAGE OPEN DAY
Saturday September 18th, 10am – 5pm
Join us to explore the rich history of Ulverston Parish Church.
Set at the completion of the building’s most extensive renovation in 1866, the day will include displays and talks by heritage craftspeople, with an opportunity for visitors to get hands on!
Family friendly childrens activities, Victorian dressing up, virtual bellringing, refreshments and so much more.

Speakers and Subjects
Talks will last 30 minutes, delivered by experts in stained glass, church stonemasonry, illuminated lettering, local ships and shipbuilders, and traditional lime mortar. Our speakers:
10.30am Tim Butler: The Mysteries of Lime Mortar
Tim Butler FRICS, has many years’ experience in surveying, valuing, and managing the renovation and conservation of period properties. Butler has a passion for old stone buildings and is a regular speaker at events, being in demand across the North West of England for his knowledge.
11.30am David Lamb: Tools of the Trade, stonemasonry through time
David Lamb is a stonemason and craftsman of the highest order. He has specialised as a cathedral stonemason and has a wealth of experience in working on historic buildings and monuments. David has applied his skills in conservation, restoration and new builds around the globe.
12.30pm Sarah Lace: Stained Glass of the South Lakes
Sarah Lace is passionate about her specialisms in Stained Glass and Illuminated Lettering. Both mediums are on the endangered list of heritage craft skills. As well as commissions for stained and leaded glass restoration or original design pieces, Sarah runs art courses on illumination. She also gives talks and demonstrations to local history societies.

2.00pm jennifer Snell: Ships and Seamen of Ulverston
Jennifer Snell is a local historian and artist with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Ulverston’s past. She has a particular interest in the ships, shipbuilders and seamen that once dominated the town’s canal and in November 2020 published a book on the subject: Ulverston Canal: Its Ships, Ship Builders and Seamen
3.00pm David Lamb: Altar Stones to War Graves, life as a Master Stonemason
4.00pm Sarah Lace: lllumination and Heraldry, The Art of Arms
