SOMETHING TO RING ABOUT!
On Monday evenings, local bell ringers once again are able to gather from 7:00-8:30 in the UPC bell tower for change ringing practice. We returned in August after CV19 coincided with the latest Major Bell Works Restoration since 1908! Our current bells were installed in 1836, with UPC Church warden’s accounts noting monies being paid to bell ringers in the mid-1700s…
This past Monday evening the Bell Band included ringers from Flookburgh, Dalton & UPC to thank Hugh Pettifer for his incredible efforts throughout the UPC Bell Works Restoration! Hugh’s (now intimate) familiarity with UPC bells, engineering expertise and hands on hard work was the glue that bound this very successful Bell Works Project through to fruition!
Beginning in 2011 with the Bell Band Fundraising, donations, wedding ringing fees, grants and events together raised an amazing and much needed £31,400

!In 2020 exploratory bell tower floor clearing and cleaning was lead by UPC bell tower captain of 50 years, Ian Taylor.
Most recently, installing a stainless steel cable to the historic bell chime this week (Oct 2021)
Hugh attended to details big and small as needed by ringers, engineers and volunteers alike.

Beginning in May 2021 the largest Furness Peninsular bell restoration project in years began by disassembling & removing every bell component that could be removed, leaving only the six bells resting quietly on wooden blocks.
Hugh voluntarily worked long hours in between contracted works, attending to all tasks simple or complicated, to provide exactly what was needed … on time … phase after phase!
As a token of our monumental appreciation, we celebrated with cider, eccles cakes, and jam scones (all homemade by band members – very tasty!) and gifted Hugh with a heather green waistcoat and the book ‘Ulverston Canal’ written by fellow bellringer & historian Jennifer Snell.
