EXPLORE TOGETHER QUESTIONS
- Why did Ruth go to the field to
- Ruth didn’t pay for the grain. Why
did Boaz let her take it?
- When have you given someone
something for free?
- How many different ways can we
show God that we are thankful to
ACTIVITY IDEA 1
Farmers used to give their first
bundle of the harvest to the church
as a way of saying thank you to God.
This is referred to as giving your ‘first
fruits’ to God. Instead of giving grain,
make a list of other things you could
give to the church or charity. (Hint: it
could be money, effort, belongings
or time in prayer.)
ACTIVITY IDEA 2
Go through your belongings and/or
kitchen cupboards (with permission)
and see what you could give away to
charity shops/food banks
Harvest is a time when we can thank
God for the food we eat (and
everything else he provides!)
Think of your favourite food and for
each letter of the food think of
something that begins with that
letter that you are also thankful for.

ALL SAINTS SERVICES
We are holding a service to remember loved ones who have passed away on Sunday 1st November. We are inviting those whom have lost someone is the last 12 months to the 9am service where those names will be read out and a candle can be lit. We are also asking those who attend our 10.30am Zoom service to have a candle, and a match, to light during the service as an act of remembrance.
Prayer is the lifeblood of the church. It connects us with God and enables us to have a living, dynamic relationship with him. We pray as individual Christians and whenever we meet together, on Sundays and during the week. Before lockdown, we had midweek prayers in the side chapel, which were attended by a few faithful people but were not accessible to those who weren’t able to join us in person.
From 6th October, we will be offering the opportunity for members of the church family to join us for prayer online during the week. Initially, we will be meeting on Zoom at 12.30 on Tuesdays and on Facebook at 09.00 on Thursdays. A link to the Tuesday meeting will be given on the weekly notice sheet and the Thursday meeting will be livestreamed on the UPC Facebook page. After a month or so, we will review this pattern to see what works best and may well revise it in the light of experience.
Some Harvest Prayer Prompts will be sent out in this weekly notice sheet and paper copies are available on request. We hope that these will
provide a focus for the church family as we unite in prayer to our heavenly Father.

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) will be held on Sunday 18th October at 11.30, following the 10.30 service. The meeting will be held on Zoom, but we will have a live link to the church building for those who otherwise could not attend. We will be electing 2 Church Wardens, 3 members of PCC and 3 members of Deanery Synod, reviewing the past year and outlining our vision for the coming year.
Documents you might want to view in preparation for the APCM:
Please contact the parish office, at email@example.com or 01229588081, if you need paper copies.
UPC NEEDS YOU
We have opportunities for the following:
2 CHURCH WARDENS
Church Wardens give a practical and spiritual lead in the parish, working alongside the Rector and the PCC. They are ex officio members of the PCC and are responsible for the smooth running of worship services and overseeing the maintenance of the church buildings. They are elected at the APCM and appointed by the Bishop. A Deputy Church Warden steps in when the Church Wardens are unavailable.
3 PCC MEMBERS
PCC (Parochial Church Council) members are elected for three years at a time. The PCC meets every two months and deals with both practical and spiritual matters on behalf of the church as a whole. It is good to have a variety of different perspectives and an openness to God’s guidance. We are looking for 3 church representatives to join the PCC to help our church to follow God’s will.
3 DEANERY SYNOD MEMBERS
Deanery Synod members are elected for three years at a time. They represent UPC on the Deanery Synod, which meets three times a year and deals with both local and diocesan issues. As the Furness Mission Community takes shape, it is good for us to play our part in discerning the way forward. You may be a PCC member and also a Deanery Synod member.
If you would be interested in any of these roles you will need to be nominated and seconded and attend the APCM on Sunday 18th October. For more information contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please do join us, and invite friends, to our next South Lakes Filling Station online on Thursday 15th October at 7pm. Following on from the September meeting when we looked at ‘Prophecy’ and had opportunities to receive personal prophecy, this month Jo Fothergill
will be speaking on ‘Hearing God’. This will be followed by a workshop when we all get a chance to listen to God for each other. It will be fun and encouraging so do join us!
